Bonded labourer system: DC instructs officials to conduct re-survey

July 2, 2017

Mysuru: Deputy Commissioner (DC) D. Randeep yesterday instructed the officials to conduct a re-survey of bonded labour system in Mysuru Sub-Division limits.

Chairing a meeting on the prevailing bonded labour system and rehabilitation of those freed from the system at the Court Hall of his office, the DC said that the bonded labour system was still alive in Mysuru Sub-Division limits and instructed Assistant Commissioner Shivegowda to call for a division-level Awareness Committee meeting and then take up the re-survey.

Earlier, when Shivegowda told the DC that there were no ‘bonded labour’ incidents in the Mysuru Sub-Division, the activists of Jeetha Vimuktha Karnataka (JVK), who took strong objection to this, said that there were reports on 10 bonded labourers in Nanjangud in the year 2015.

JVK Organising Convenor Umesh, who spoke, said that in the year 2015, there were reports of 10 bonded labourers in Nanjangud taluk limits and the issue was discussed during the District-level Awareness Committee meeting chaired by the then DC and added that there was no progress in this regard.

He further said that the then DC C. Shikha had instructed the officials to conduct a re-survey but due to the negligent attitude of the officials, the re-survey was not conducted.

Meanwhile, DC Randeep, who expressed his displeasure over the absence of officials and representatives from various Departments said that another meeting involving all officials would be held this month.

Additional Deputy Commissioner T. Venkatesh, JVK activists and others were present during the meeting.
