Month-long ‘Mango Mela’ begins in city

Mysuru: A month-long ‘Mango Mela,’ organised for the first time by the Association of Fruit Merchants, Associates and Shop Tenants, along with Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), commenced this morning at APMC Sub-Yard on Sayyaji Rao Road here. About 40 stalls have been erected which features over 20 varieties of mangoes with assured quality and at reasonable price.

The cheapest is Sindhoora at Rs. 25 per kg, while Raspuri is available at Rs. 30 to Rs. 40 per kg. Varieties like Malgova, Badami, Alphonso are being sold at Rs. 40 to Rs. 60. Also on sale are Valeja, Thotapuri, Bemisha, Sirin, Sakkargutla and Daseri.

The biggest variety is Malgova, with each fruit weighing about 600 grams, while the other ones weigh between 200  and 250 grams.

After 15 days, mangoes from Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are expected to arrive, said Association Vice-President Parvez to Star of Mysore.

Inaugurating the Mela, APMC Chairman S. Siddegowda expressed happiness in the Association organising the Mela for the first time. He opined that such Melas would be beneficial to farmers and customers.

Association President Attar Babu, Secretary Sikandar Ahmed and General Secretary Noor Ahmed were present.
