Mysurean among 3 women chain-snatchers arrested

April 16, 2017

Chamarajanagar – Three notorious  women, who used to snatch chains from women attending village fairs, have been arrested by Shivamogga Police and have been handed over to Chamarajanagar Police. Gold ornaments worth Rs. 14,15,500 weighing over 555.44 grams have been seized.

The arrested women have been identified as 37-year-old Jyothi alias Ramya, a resident of Muddaiahnahundi in Gundlupet, 50-year-old Geetha alias Sumithra, a resident of Vijayanagar in Mysuru and 35-year-old Nagarathna alias Savitha, a resident of Channarayapatna in Hassan.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Chamarajanagar Superintendent of Police Kuldeepkumar R. Jain said that the women used to visit various village fairs and jathras across the State  and used to snatch gold chains and other valuables from gullible women.

“The women were initially arrested in Shivamogga by the Shiralakoppa Police when they were robbing women at a village festival. During enquiry, they revealed that they were involved in a series of chain-snatching incidents in Chamarajanagar and Kollegal. They were produced before a Court by the Shivamogga Police when the Kollegal Police sought their custody to investigate the cases in Kollegal and Chamarajanagar,” he said.

Village women were their main targets and after committing the crime, the women would manage to sneak away from the place and pawn the jewellery at various pawn-broker shops in Mysuru, Channarayapatna, Hassan and Kollegal, the SP said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Geetha Prasanna and Kollegal DySP Sneha were present along with the SP.
