April 25, 2017

Chennai: A day-long strike, led by Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), began in Tamil Nadu today in support of drought-hit farmers, partially hitting normal life across the State.

Farmers from the State, who were on protest in New Delhi for 41 days, reached Chennai this morning and participated in the State-wide bandh. Police have taken all steps including deployment of adequate personnel across the State to ensure maintenance of law and order.

DMK Working President M.K. Stalin, who led the protest in Tiruvarur district today morning, was detained along with senior party leader T. R. Baalu.

Bandh was called at a meeting on Apr. 16, chaired by Stalin, in which Congress, CPI, CPM, VCK and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) participated.
