Traffic violations on the rise

March 13, 2017

Sir,

It is surprising to learn that more than 3,000 traffic violations in 45 different categories were being noticed on a Sunday in city. Several hundreds or thousands more violations might be going on unnoticed without getting caught by the Traffic Police. If questioned, some start arguing without acknowledging their violation.

Use of defective or no number plates to avoid getting caught is also on the rise. Presence of dark sun films in cars, which was banned several years ago, can be seen even now. Talking on mobile while driving, triple or quadruple driving and not wearing helmets have become a routine. Ignorance and avoidance of traffic rules by riders are the main reasons for the increase in traffic violations rather than increased number of vehicles.

Riding in opposite direction of the flow of the traffic, which is a serious issue, by even four-wheelers is being noticed these day. Increased penalties and suspension or cancellation of licence after certain number of violations, as is being done in many other countries can only bring some road sense in the vehicle-users. Till that time there may not be any respite in traffic violations.
