Mysuru/Mysore: Raag Milan has organised a seminar on Bansuri (Indian bamboo flute) by eminent flutist Lyon Leifer from Chicago (USA), senior disciple of late Pandit Devendra Murdeshwar, on Jan. 11 (Saturday) at 10 am at “Meenakshi” (M.L. Krishnaswamy’s residence), #12/A, 1st Main Road, 4th Stage, TK Layout.
The seminar will be addressed by Lyon Leifer, which will include topics pertaining to bansuri, making of bansuri; being of interest to students, performers, scholars and music enthusiasts.
The seminar will include a bansuri recital featuring Ravi Shankar Mishra and his students.
Lyon Leifer accepted a Fulbright Grant to India after performing as a member of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He remained five years, learning bansuri continuously from his Guru, the late Devendra Murdeshwar, in the tradition established by Pannalal Ghosh. Back in his hometown Chicago, Lyon has been a leading flutist in Western music, performing in almost all of the city’s finest ensembles while serving as the Flute Instructor at Northeastern Illinois University.
Meanwhile, he has deepened his study and practice of bansuri and teaches upcoming players. He performs on a self-made instrument, following his guru’s practice. Lyon’s bansuri appearances include the US National Flute Association and British Flute Society Conventions, festivals in India, the Chicago World Music Festival, the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, CA and numerous other venues. His book, How to Play the Bansuri: A Manual for Self Instruction Based on the Teaching of Devendra Murdeshwar has become a well-known resource. Currently, Leifer is engaged in a Fulbright-Nehru Research project in India in connection with the prestigious music school, Sangit Mahabharati.
