A security guard, who was depressed over being made to run about for his job, allegedly attempted suicide at Vidyaashram College premises in Jayalakshmipuram here yesterday.
The security guard, who attempted suicide by pouring petrol on himself and setting fire, has been identified as 55-year-old Shivanna, a native of Holenarasipur in Hassan district. It is reported that Shivanna was appointed as the security guard at the girls hostel in Vijayanagar 1st Stage which is run by the College about six months back. But about two months ago, the management is said to have told Shivanna to stop working at the hostel with an assurance of providing him a job in the college.
Shivanna, who went to the college for two days, was allegedly not allotted the job. With no job either in the hostel or the college, Shivanna who became depressed, doused himself with petrol and set himself ablaze in front of the security guard chamber in the college yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, other security guards and students, who saw the incident, rushed to Shivanna’s rescue, doused the fire and immediately shifted him to Brindavan Hospital for treatment.
Though Shivanna is out of danger, he has suffered severe burns on his back.
Jayalakshmipuram Police have registered a case in this regard and are investigating.
