Mysuru: Former Mayor and former State Safai Karmachari Commission Chairman Narayana has urged the Centre to ensure social security for Pourakarmikas.
Speaking at a documentary screening programme on the ‘Status of Pourakarmikas and Manual Scavenging’ organised by PUCL (Peoples Union for Civil Liberties) at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Research and Extension Centre here, Narayana said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was spending crores of rupees for Swachh Bharath Mission. But thousands of Pourakarmikas who are working in deplorable conditions are living under a sense of social insecurity, which the Government should seriously take note of, he said.
Alleging that Bengaluru Pourakarmikas were cheated of Rs. 384 crore by officials and contractors, he said that a probe has been ordered into the matter.
Earlier, Chennai-based docu-mentary Director Divya Bharati inaugurated the screening. PUCL Mysuru President Dr. Rathi Rao, Centre Director Dr. S. Narendra Kumar, Karnataka Rajya Hindulida Vargagala Jagruta Vedike State President K.S. Shivaram, former Mayor Purushotham, writers Prof. Kalegowda Nagawara and Vaddagere Chinnaswamy and others were present.
