Lions ‘Plate Bank’ inauguration tomorrow

Mysore/Mysuru: In an effort to dissuade public from using plastic cups and plates various in functions, city’s Lions Clubs International in association with Bengaluru-based Adamya Chetana, has set up ‘Lions Plate Bank’ at ‘Hasivu Nivarana Kendra’ on Akkamahadevi Road in J.P. Nagar .

Announcing this at a press meet here yesterday, Lions Club Region 4 President S. Murthy said that Adamya Chetana President Tejaswini Ananthkumar, wife of late Union Minister H.N. Ananthkumar, will inaugurate the Lions Plate Bank at 4.30 pm tomorrow(Feb.27), in the presence of MLA S.A. Ramdas, MUDA Chairman H.V. Rajeev, Corporator Sharadamma, former Mayor B.L. Bhyrappa, Lions Club President Nagaraj V. Bhairy, MCC Health Officer Dr. D.G. Nagaraj and others. Pointing out that the Plate Bank is jointly set up by Adamya Chetana, Lions Club of Mysore Nisarga and  Lions Club of Mysore Mayuri, Murthy said that the Plate Bank will function from the premises of ‘Hasivu Nivarana Kendra’ on Akkamahadevi Road in J.P. Nagar.

Murthy said that Mysuru is generating 18 tonnes of  waste everyday due to dumping of banana leaves, plastic cups and plates etc. and added that the Plate Bank will help in reducing waste generation by providing steel plates and cups for functions upon intimation in advance with a deposit Rs.10,000 as security, following which 1,000 steel plates, cups and spoons will be given. The organisers should return them cleaned in exact number and the deposit will be returned, he said. There are plans to hike the number to 5,000  in the future depending upon the response.

Continuing, Murthy said that this concept has been a success in Benglauru and based on the suggestion from Tejaswini Ananthkumar, the Plate Bank has been set up in Mysuru. Initially, the plates will given only for vegetarian food. However, the service may be extended to non-vegetarian food too depending upon the success of the Bank, he said and added that there are plans to set up branches across the city to extend the service to a larger population.

Lions Region-4 meet in city tomorrow

The Fourth Regional meet of International Lions Clubs Federation (District 317-A) Regional meet of Region-4 will take place at Rahul Convention Hall  in Vishweshwaranagar at 5 pm tomorrow (Feb.27). The registration for the meet will be held from 3 pm to 4 pm, following which the banner will be released. Bengaluru’s  Adamya Chetana President Tejaswini  Ananthkumar will deliver the main address. MUDA Chairman H.V. Rajeev will be the guest of honour, Lions Regional Chairman S. Murthy will preside.

The meet will feature distribution of sewing machines to 20 poor women, artificial legs to 25 beneficiaries, installation of pure drinking water units at Begur Government  Hospital and Gundlupet Government  Junior College,setting up of solar lighting system at Kollegal Lions School and installation of sanitary pads vending machine.
