Mango, Jackfruit Mela from tomorrow

Mysuru:  Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G. Sankar will inaugurate the Mango and Jackfruit Mela organised by the Horticulture Department at Curzon Park premises near the Mysore Palace at 9 am tomorrow.

The Mela is being held from June 1 to 5 and will be open from 9 am to 8 pm.

In all, there are 28 stalls out of which 24 are earmarked for selling mangoes and two stalls for jackfruit. The remaining two stalls are meant for Sasya Santhe where saplings will be sold.

The Horticulture Department has organised this Mela in order to see that the mango and  jackfruit growers get good price for their produce and for the people to taste varieties of fruits. More than 12 varieties of both mango and jackfruit will be available. It has also promised a clean, environment-friendly  and healthy mela.

The varieties of mangoes which will be available for sale at the Mela includes  Badami, Baganapalli, Rasapuri, Mallika, Sindoora, Malagova, Totapuri, Neelam, Amrapali, Kesar, Dasheri and others.

In Mysuru District, mango is a major crop and varieties like Ratnagiri, Alphonso, Badami, Rasapuri, Sindoora, Malagova,Totapuri, Mallika, Dasheri and other varieties are grown in 4,136 hectares. Every year nearly 40,117 tonnes is grown.

Along with mango, jackfruit is also being sold in this five-day Mela. This fruit grown in Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Ramanagaram and Bengaluru Rural’s Doddaballapura will be displayed and sold at the Mela.

Sasya Santhe

There are good rains everywhere and this is the right time to plant fruits and ornamental plants. In the light of this, ‘Sasya Santhe’ has been organised at the Mango and Jackfruit Mela to sell fruits and ornamental saplings available at Horticulture Departments and Nurseries in Mysuru District, at minimum prices.
