An apology of Swachh Mysuru in Vontikoppal !

Sir,

This photo of overflowing garbage in Vontikoppal speaks volumes about the indifference of Mysureans to keep our city clean. On one hand we have several high-level committee meetings, call by Heads of various religions, participation by committed NGOs, marches by students etc., to create awareness on keeping city clean. Why are all such efforts ineffective to stop this kind of shocking scenes of garbage all over the city?

It is easy to blame the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) but are we justified? What is the responsibility of the citizens? Why are we putting garbage outside the garbage bin even when it is not full? How many residents complain to their Corporators about the failure of MCC to remove garbage on time? Finally, how diligent are we in paying property tax so that MCC has enough revenue to spend the required amount for garbage handling? The list of residents’ non-involvement is long.

We often give the example of Singapore when we discuss clean city. The most important factor for such a development is the huge penalty imposed on those who throw garbage on the road. Will we be able to adopt such a strict regulation?

Only when every resident gets involved in keeping the city clean, Mysuru can get back the cleanest city award we got two years back.
