Sir,
I really appreciate the initiatives taken by various clubs and organisations in extending support to the needy during these trying times. The act of distributing food packets to the underprivileged deserves a huge applause. However, it would be more appealing to see it done in a thoughtful way. In almost all the photos pertaining to food donation articles published in Star of Mysore, I spot plastic water bottles predominantly. I do agree that nutritious food should be accompanied by clean drinking water but the single-use plastic can definitely be avoided.
For instance, the organisers can facilitate potable water using water dispensers and the recipients can be asked to use their own cups or water bottles. This will also ensure that sufficient water is provided rather than restricting it at one bottle per person. Such an alternative will require cooperation from the people but will nevertheless effectively address the contamination issue in an eco-friendly manner.
I strongly believe that consideration towards environment is the need of the hour as we have probably by now fully realised the enormous value of oxygen especially during the prevalent pandemic.
