Atal Bihari Vajpayee admitted to AIIMS

New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted to the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) this morning based on doctors’ recommendations.

Vajpayee, one of India’s tallest Prime Ministers, is 93. Details of his hospitalisation are still sketchy. The BJP says he’s been taken to the hospital for a routine check-up. AIIMS director Randeep Guleria is personally keeping a watch on Vajpayee’s health.

Vajpayee was the 10th Prime Minister of India and a senior leader of the BJP. He is the first non-Indian National Congress Prime Minister to serve a  full five-year term. Vajpayee is currently the oldest living former Indian Prime Minister. He was a Parliamentarian for over four decades.

Vajpayee ruled the country for 13 days in 1996, 13 months in 1998 and for five years from 1999. Vajpayee is a great orator and his speeches are still closely watched. On his birthday on December 25, the BJP-led government celebrates Good Governance Day.
