The chaotic movement of autorickshaws at the Sub-Urban Bus Stand has become a major concern. The number of autos operating here has increased significantly, but the lack of proper regulation has led to confusion and inconvenience for commuters.
Passengers are finding it difficult to even cross the road safely. The absence of a proper signal system and effective traffic control has only worsened the situation. Autorickshaws are often seen parked in groups right in front of the bus stand, obstructing the smooth movement of vehicles.
Many auto drivers bypass the designated pre-paid counter lanes and instead park near the entrance and exit gates to pick up passengers.
This not only leads to congestion but also makes it difficult for KSRTC buses to enter and exit the terminal. Pedestrians, too, are at risk as they are forced to navigate through moving traffic amid this disorder.
Another concern is autos overcharging. In the absence of strict monitoring, some drivers refuse to use meters and demand high fares, especially from tourists and unsuspecting commuters. This is worrying for a city like Mysuru, which attracts a large number of visitors.
To address the issue, a few immediate steps can be considered. Strict lane discipline must be enforced by ensuring autos operate only from designated bays. There is also a need to increase the presence of Traffic Police during peak hours to prevent illegal parking near the bus stand gates.
The pre-paid auto counter should be made fully functional, with drivers required to queue and operate through it. In addition, earmarking proper parking spaces for autorickshaws would help ease congestion in the area.
