Sir,
This is with reference to the report published in Star of Mysore dated Nov. 5, regarding the Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar’s opinion on the proposed construction of two new flyovers in the city — Vinoba Road and Jhansi Rani Lakshmibai (JLB) Road.
I wholeheartedly support his concern over this hasty and ill-considered project.
Mysuru is globally admired for its heritage charm, architectural beauty and well-planned urban landscape. The construction of flyovers in the heart of the city will not only mar the heritage skyline but also permanently alter the character that defines Mysuru’s identity. Once heritage is lost, it cannot be recreated.
Development is important, but it should not come at the cost of our history. The Government should rethink this plan and find better ways to manage traffic while protecting Mysuru’s heritage and culture.
The State Government should therefore reconsider this proposal in the larger interest of preserving the city’s legacy.
It is also noteworthy that the Public Works Department has already initiated the process of preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the two projects.
However, such reports must not be treated as a green signal for irreversible changes without wider public consultation and expert heritage review.
Let Mysuru continue to remain the cultural capital it has always been — graceful, green and historically proud.
