Bhima-Koregaon anniversary in city this evening

Mysuru: Marking the 201st anniversary of Bhima-Koregaon, the Jai Bheem Sports Club will pay tribute at ‘Jay Stambh’ near Jayanagar Railway Gate in city at 6.30 pm today (Jan.1).

Announcing this at a press meet here yesterday, the Club President Jayaraj Hegde said that the event will be a commemoration of the 201st anniversary of Bhima-Koregaon, in which the Peshwas were defeated by the British forces in a historic third Anglo-Maratha Battle that ended at Bhima-Koregaon in Pune district of Maharashtra in 1818. The British later erected a victory obelisk (Memorial) and the Dalits regard it as their symbolic victory over higher castes, which is celebrated annually on New Year Day (Jan.1), he said.

Continuing, Hegde said that retired High Court Judge Nagamohan Das will inaugurate the programme at 6.30 pm today.

Urilingapeddi Mutt Seer Sri Jananaprakasha Swamiji and T. Narasipur Buddhist Monk Prakash Bantheji will grace the occasion, he said.

Writer Siddaswamy, activist Naga Siddartha Holeyar, Ashokapuram Police Inspector Siddaraju, Bodisatva Credit Co-operative Society Director Eshwar Chakkadi and Nele Hinnale organisation’s K.R. Gopalakrishna will be felicitated on the occasion, he said.

Prior to the event, a procession will be taken out at 4.30 pm from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Park in Ashokapuaram to the Town Hall, featuring tableaux of Dr. Ambedkar and Buddha, he added.
