Mysuru: “The Bible and the Bard deepen our intellectuality and spirituality,” opined Dr. R. Purnima, a retired Professor and Founder- Director of Children’s Literary Club, Mysuru. She was speaking on ‘Biblical allusions and imagery in the plays of William Shakespeare’ at a lecture organised by the Department of English and the IQAC of SBRR Mahajana First Grade College in city recently.
Pointing out the importance of the Bible, which is rich in vocabulary and remains not only the most talked about book but also the best selling book, the Speaker said that writers like Eliot, Hopkins and others too have made biblical references in their writings. However she described Shakespeare as a serious reader of the Bible and said that more than 2,000 references to the Bible can be found in the dramas of Shakespeare.
The echoes of the Bible are so vibrant in the plays that it has moulded the language of the scholars, she said and added that an undercurrent of religious meaning lies in the drama.
