BJP, Congress stage protest in front of Gundlupet Police Station

Alleged distribution of cash for voters

Accusing the Congress of distributing money among the electorate for Gundlupet by-polls, BJP workers staged a protest in front of Gundlupet Police Station on Tuesday.

Soon as the BJP workers launched the demonstration, the Congress staged a counter demonstration accusing the BJP of attempting to banish the State Government’s image.

Acting on a tip off, the Gundlupet Police caught Baragi ZP Congress Members Channappa and seized over Rs. 1 lakh from him. During questioning, Channappa said that he had drawn the money from a bank for his personal use and produced some documents in support of his claim.

The election authorities let him off after obtaining a written undertaking from him.

The BJP workers after coming to know of the incident, staged a demonstration in front of Gundlupet Police Station under the leadership of former Minister M.P. Renukacharya. Irked by the BJP’s demonstration, Congress workers led by ZP Member Kabballi Mahesh staged a counter protest accusing the BJP of making false allegations.

As a result, tension prevailed around the Police Station for sometime. The Police had to resort to mild lathi-charge to prevent any untoward incident  from happening.

Meanwhile, Sectoral officers seized Rs. 1.36 lakh unaccounted cash being transported in a car. The officials were on a routine check at Hakkalapura Cross check-post, when they seized Rs. 74,000 (37 notes of Rs. 2,000) from one Puttaswamy of Kanakapura and Rs. 62,000 (31 notes of Rs. 2,000) from one Umesh, totalling Rs. 1.36 lakh cash.
