Yoga Guru birth centenary celebrations
Mysuru: The foremost proponent of yoga in the world Prof.B.K.S. Iyengar’s birth centenary was celebrated at Akkana Balaga School in city yesterday.
On the occasion, yoga teachers Yoga Prakash, Ananth, K. Ajit, Yoga Narasimha (Murali) and Apoorva Suresh were conferred BKS Yoga Ratna award by KPMK Charitable Trust.
Social Worker K. Raghuram Vajpayee speaking on the occasion said that Iyengar, the great yoga guru was instrumental in setting up ‘B.K.S. Iyengar School of Yoga’ throughout the world and spread this ancient form of yoga among the common people. Most of the yoga teachers have been trained directly or indirectly by B.K.S. Iyengar. If at all yoga has spread in the world today it is because of him and his contribution is immeasurable, he said.
Iyengar in his youth was suffering from illness and was cured by his uncle, the famous yoga exponent Tirumala Krishnamacharya, through yoga. That is how B.K.S. developed interest in yoga and started learning it deeply. Then he went to Pune and without knowing the language he established his stamp on yoga there. Within a few years through dint of hard work and achievements, he became known to the whole world, he said.
On the occasion book on his life history were distributed to the school children and awareness on yoga was created.
Melukote Vangipura Mutt Seer Ilai Alwar Swamiji, Patanjali Yoga Shikshana Trust’s N.S. Sathyanarayan, KMPK Charitable Trust President Vikram Iyengar, District Brahmin Association President D.T. Prakash, Suyog Hospital Founder Dr. S.P. Yoganna, Akkana Balaga School Head Master Sugunavati, Jayasimha, Sridhar and others were present.
