Mysuru: A 14-year-old boy from Nanjangud taluk, who slipped into coma after undergoing an ear surgery at K.R. Hospital on Nov.21, continues to be in a critical condition.
Abhi, 14 of Kadabur in Nanjangud taluk was admitted to K.R. Hospital for an ear ailment on Nov.20 and underwent an operation the following day (Nov.21). Before the operation, Abhi was given anaesthesia and during the course of surgery the boy was administered an injection to prevent excessive bleeding. But later, the boy suffered a heart attack and was shifted to the hospital ICU, where he slipped into coma following a brain hemorrhage on Nov. 22 despite the best efforts of the doctors to revive him. Now, two days after slipping into coma, Abhi remains to be critical.
A team of about eight specialist doctors are constantly monitoring the health condition of Abhi, who has been put on ventilator support, even as doctors are struggling to ensure that Abhi’s vital organs are functioning normally, according to hospital sources.
Meanwhile, K.R. Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Srinivas said that an injection is normally administered to a patient for preventing excessive bleeding during surgeries and it happens that 3 out of every 1,000 patients may slip into coma. “Possibly this has happened in the case of Abhi and we are looking into all aspects of the surgery to find out the exact reason,” he said.
The Karnataka Medical Council too will look into the matter and action will be taken if any lapses on the part of the doctors are found, Dr. Srinivas said and added that the boy is under constant medical care and the doctors are doing their best to save the boy.
