Mysuru: The City Crime Branch (CCB) Police have solved a case of house burglary which took place on Dec.31 on Pattegar Street in Mandi Mohalla by arresting father-son duo and recovering Rs.23 lakh cash and 208 grams gold jewellery worth about Rs.6 lakh from them in four days.
The arrested have been identified as 42-year-old Riyaz Shariff and his son 22-year-old Fayaz Shariff, residents of Hanumathanagar here.
The Cops have also seized a goods auto (KA-09 A-1431) used for the crime by the duo.
Though the case was registered by Mandi Police, City Police Commissioner Dr. A. Subrahmanyeswara Rao had transferred the case to CCB for investigation.
Disclosing this at a press conference at his office here this morning, City Police Commissioner Dr. A. S. Rao said that Riyaz was arrested on Jan. 4, while his son Fayaz on Jan. 7.
The theft had taken place at the house of one Sunil in Mandi Mohalla, who owns a utensils shop near Sangam Theatre here and the theft had taken place when Sunil along with his family had been to Melukote.
The Police Chief said that the accused, who were into copper business were in constant touch with Sunil over their business and also used to frequent Sunil’s house.
The accused, who knew that Sunil had gone to Melukote along with his family members, came to his (Sunil) house on Jan. 31 in a goods auto, gained entry to the house on the second floor by opening the lock using the keys which was kept on the loft (Sajja) by Sunil, which the accused knew, the Police Commissioner said and added that the accused made away with the locker in which Rs. 23 lakh cash and gold jewels were kept.
He further said that the accused after breaking the locker and taking away the valuables in it had thrown the empty locker into Dalvoy Lake on Mysuru-Nanjangud Road.
Drama at Dalvoy Lake
It may be recalled that on Jan. 6 morning, there was a beehive of activities near Dalvoy Lake as people thronged the Lake following rumours of gold and cash been dumped by dacoits.
The rumours were so strong that people came in search of the booty early in the morning with some of them even entering the Lake and the rest poking the water near the Lake’s bund with long sticks hoping to strike gold.
The crowd later dispersed after coming to know that it was only rumours.
Residents cautioned
The Police Chief has asked the residents not to leave the house keys at secret places in their houses while going out and also not to keep huge cash and gold jewellery in their homes.
