New Delhi: With a new Government in place in Karnataka, the Union Government is likely to send back the proposal sent by the previous Siddharamaiah led Congress Government seeking separate religion tag for Lingayat community.
The Union Government, which had received the proposal just before the Assembly polls, had forwarded it to the Minority Affairs Ministry for consideration.
The Siddharamaiah Government had constituted a six-member Committee headed by Justice (Retd) Nagamohan Das to look into the demand made by some Lingayat Seers and community political leaders, who had sought separate tag.
The Committee submitted its report to the then Siddharamaiah Government just a few days before the announcement of the poll schedule, stating that the demand for a separate Lingayat religion needed to be honoured.
Based on the Committee’s submission, the Siddharamaiah Government submitted a proposal to the Union Government. Now that a new Government headed by Kumaraswamy has come to power in Karnataka, the Centre is likely to return back the proposal to State Government for re-consideration, it is learnt.
