Mysuru: The newly-constructed international-level swimming pool, much-awaited by sportspersons of city will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddharamaiah this evening at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium in Nazarbad.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister will also lay the foundation stone for construction of a tennis academy, gymnastics centre, sports hostel and two synthetic courts.
The pool has been built at a cost of Rs. 5 crore and it includes a kids’ pool, practice pool, a 10-lane world-class competition pool, a water treatment plant, toilets, bathrooms, an administrative block and ample parking place for vehicles.
According to K.L. Subhash Chandra, Joint Director, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, 301 sportspersons who achieved laurels in national and international events during 2013-14 would be awarded cash prizes worth Rs. 5 crore.
On the lines of infrastructure provided by Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association in Bengaluru, a Tennis Academy will be established at the Stadium and the Department has floated a tender worth Rs. 1 crore to create synthetic turf, he said.
Two synthetic courts will come up with floodlights. A separate sports hostel for women would be constructed beside the existing hostel at a cost of Rs. 2 crore which also would have a multi-gym. On the cards is to provide infrastructure for adventure sports, explained Subhash Chandra adding that the inaugural function this evening would have District in-charge Minister Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa as the chief guest along with Ministers Tanveer Sait and Pramod Madhwaraj.
