Children’s Science Congress-2017: Shift Trees but don’t Chop them

Mysuru: While the world is expanding doublefolds as humans are conquering all possible lands, two boys from St. Joseph’s Central School, Vijayanagar, have a different point of view. N. Nagpranav and M. Rahul want the trees to be shifted rather than chopping them off. In the National Children’s Science Congress at KSOU campus they have setup a demonstration  model of a Tree Shifter that works on the principle of hydraulics.  They have utilised an Arduino Uno Micro controller that acts as a human brain to receive signals and commands in this model.

With the help of a switch, a Bluetooth component and a relay motor this machine functions. The Bluetooth is connected to a mobile device or an IOS device. With the help of a B2E Joystick app on the device the machine is navigated. Bluetooth function comes in handy where in land expansion is required in forests or places where mobility is difficult. Nagpranav said, “This prevents global warming; Trees can be directly uprooted and carried to a different place and planted with minimal human labour. This technique will be very vital as the population is increasing and there have been no means devised for the shifting of the trees till now.”  A tree shifter is a specialised machine that mechanises the transplanting of large plants whose hand-powered transplanting with spades would be prohibitively laborious. This machine will lift the entire tree, digging into the ground and lifts the root and the soil (which is referred to as a ‘root ball’) out of the ground and transplants it in the required area.
