Col. C.K. Nayudu Trophy 2017-18: Karnataka gain crucial first Innings lead

Mysuru: In the ongoing test match between Karnataka and Baroda in the U-23 Col. C.K. Nayudu Trophy 2017-18 held at Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Grounds, Mysuru, Karnataka  today managed to gain a crucial first innings lead of 112 runs.

Wrapping up Baroda for a total of 85 runs, Karnataka put up a score of 197 runs in their first innings on a pitch that seemed to assist the bowlers.

After skipper Abhishek Reddy fell early, D. Nischal (46 runs) and Abhinav Manohar (39 runs) steadied the innings for Karnataka with a partnership of 77 runs. After their dismissals, wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals.

Carrying on from their overnight score of 129 for 5 in 48 overs, Karnataka extended their lead to 112 runs on the second day.

A brilliant spell of bowling from G.S. Maan, kept Karnataka under check as they managed a total of 197 runs in 62.2 overs. G.S. Maan returned with the figures of 4-48 in his 19 overs. B.R. Sharath played a cameo with an attacking knock of 41 runs from just 36 balls which included 6 fours and one maximum.

Baroda started their second innings on a positive note. While M.T. Shaikh played a stroke filled knock of 45 runs, skipper Prabhav Thaker had walked into the pitch with a mindset to defend almost every ball. Prabhav Thaker eventually was adjudged LBW off the bowling of spinner K.N. Bharath.

Thaker scored just 2 runs after facing about 40 deliveries. Shaikh decided to counter the spin by walking down the pitch as he smashed Shubhang Hegde for a six and a couple of boundaries in a single over. But he could not last long on the pitch, as he edged Bharath’s delivery directly into the hands of Abhishek Reddy who was positioned at first slip. At Lunch, Baroda was 58 for 2 in 16.4 overs on the second day.
