Hassan: Minister of Forests, Ecology and Environment, Eshwar B. Khandre has announced the establishment of a five-member expert team by the State Government to investigate the unfortunate death of the renowned Dasara elephant, Arjuna. The incident occurred recently during an operation to capture rogue elephants near the Yeslur forest range.
Minister Khandre, who paid his respects to Arjuna at Dabballikatte forest yesterday, disclosed that the expert team includes Ajay Mishra, retired Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Dr. Sukumar, former Member of the Wildlife Board, Dr. Madan Kompal, Ballistic Expert, Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Bengaluru and Shaswathi Mishra, Additional PCCF. He urged the team to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit a detailed report within two weeks.
Describing the operation on Dec. 4 as one of the most challenging and perilous, Minister Khandre emphasised the risks faced by Forest personnel during such endeavours. He acknowledged Arjuna’s role in safeguarding the lives of those involved in the operation, as the wild elephant unexpectedly attacked.
The Committee will engage with everyone who participated in the operation, ensuring a fair, impartial and transparent investigation. The focus will be on assessing any potential lapses.
Dismissing reports of bullet injuries to Arjuna, Minister Khandre revealed plans to provide special training to sharpshooters, veterinarians and the Elephant Task Force staff to enhance the effectiveness and safety of future operations. Expressing concern over Arjuna’s demise, he announced a Government decision to prohibit the involvement of elephants aged above 60 in future operations.
Minister Khandre highlighted ongoing efforts to update the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for such operations. While Supreme Court guidelines permit the use of elephants up to 65 years, the Minister personally recommended modifying the SOP to restrict their use until 60 years. Discussions will also consider whether Dasara elephants should be part of such operations.
