Mysore/Mysuru: With a growing number of cases of the novel coronavirus confirmed across the world, having a sore throat or some sniffles might feel like a cause for concern. But in most cases, there is no reason to worry, experts say.
“If you are worried you might have the coronavirus, pick up the phone before you seek medical treatment. The reason for this is two fold: In very mild cases, your doctor might be able to give you advice on how to treat your symptoms at home without needing to see you in person, which would reduce the number of other people you expose,” said office-bearers from Mysore Medical College Alumni Association (MAA) and MAHAN, the Mysore Association of Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Diagnostic Centre.
At a joint press conference held at Pathrakarthara Bhavan in city yesterday, Mahan President Dr. K. Javeed Nayeem said, “vast majority of cases are going to be mild, and people are going to recover just like they do from a cold or flu-like illness. There is no need to panic but people must take precautions. In more serious cases please approach doctors where medical treatment is necessary to assist with breathing issues or other problems.”
“If you have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with the coronavirus or have recently travelled to an area where the virus is spreading, and you develop a fever, a cough or difficulty breathing, consult a doctor for professional guidance on whether to be tested,” he added.
Coronavirus is spread through respiratory vapour, such as when someone sneezes or coughs into the air around you. “The things you should do to protect yourself from the coronavirus are things you should do every day. The main thing you can do to prevent any respiratory illness is to practice good personal hygiene,” said Dr. S.P. Yoganna of Suyog Hospital.
“Avoid close contact with people who are sick, especially people exhibiting respiratory symptoms and fever. Stay home when you’re sick and regularly and thoroughly clean surfaces, such as counter tops and doorknobs, with a disinfectant. Also, don’t heed to messages on social media as most of them are fake and come from pranksters and unauthenticated sources,” he added.
MAHAN Secretary H.R. Abhijith, Dr. Deepu Changappa of Cauvery Heart and Multispecialty Hospital, MAA President Dr. Prasannashankar, Dr. Muddasir Khan, Dr. Vijaya Cheluvaraju and others were present.
