Bengaluru: The State Government has extended the deadline for installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) to Sept. 15. The Transport Department, on Wednesday, issued a notification in this regard, giving vehicle owners time to affix the HSRPs.
Responding to a petition filed by the HSRP Manufacturers’ Association of India and others, the Transport Department had told the High Court last month that it would not take any “precipitative action” until June 12 against violating vehicles.
The High Court is hearing writ petitions against the Department’s Aug. 17, 2023, notification, which mandates that vehicles registered before Apr. 1, 2019, affix the HSRPs through OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and their authorised dealers.
All vehicles registered in Karnataka before Apr. 1, 2019, have to meet the requirement while vehicles registered after Apr. 1, 2019, get the HSRP at the time of registration itself.
After introduction of the rule, motorists who own vehicles manufactured by companies that have exited the Indian market or stopped manufacturing, are finding it difficult to book HSRP. Also, those who have bought vehicles with registration of other States, but are permanent residents of Karnataka, are also finding it difficult to book the HSRPs.
Vehicle owners have urged the authorities concerned to look into the issues and find a solution to the problems.
