‘Democracy in grave danger, civil society must act’

CFD President S.R. Hiremath writes detailed letter to President

Mysuru: The Citizens For Democracy (CFD) has written a 13-page open letter to President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, about the grave danger to the country, which is 20 times worse than the Emergency rule of Indira Gandhi (1975-77) posed to our Constitution, democracy and civilisation itself, and the civil society must raise to the occasion to fight it, said CFD President and social activist S.R. Hiremath.

Addressing a press conference at the Patrakarthara Bhavan here on Friday, after releasing a copy of the letter to the President, he said that democracy is facing a crisis today.

Stating that politicians were succumbing to money and power and are defecting to other parties is an assault on democracy and a serious crime, he said that the role of people is necessary to stop such attacks against the Constitution and hence it is important to create awareness among the people.

The CFD has planned a National Conference in New Delhi on June 29 and 30 to chalk out a vigorous campaign and a people’s movement for not only restoration of democracy but also to find sustainable solutions to the problems, he said.

The grave situation that was there in the country during 2008-09 when the mining mafia was in operation and  there was no control over them, is happening now when institutions like RBI, CBI, Election Commission of India, Judiciary etc., are being systematically weakened and destroyed during the rule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said.

The Modi Government has miserably failed to fulfil its promises made during 2014 Lok Sabha elections like job creation, doubling farmer’s income by implementing Swaminathan Report, bringing back black money stashed abroad to India, Rs.15 lakh to each family etc., he said.

Calling the Army, the Modi Sena and PM Modi, deliberately and blatantly urging the first time voters to dedicate their vote to the martyrs of Pulwama attack, politicising the Defence Forces for getting votes for his party, the BJP, are all serious charges. Looking at the situation in the country today, the Janandolan movement started by Jayaprakash Narayan during emergency is required now also, opined Hiremath.

JCB must be wiped out: The JCB (Janata Dal, Congress and BJP) in the State must be wiped out and a counter political development must take place. A discussion in this direction is inevitable, he said.

Chandrashekar Meti, Abhiruchi Ganesh, Karunakaran and others were present at the press meet.

Whichever government comes to power in the Centre this time, the country’s problems are not going to be solved.  The RSS which is supporting the NDA government is taking the country’s development back. People know the corruption that occurred in the BJP government.  Hence, the Citizens for Democracy established by Jayaprakash Narayan is ready to fight against corruption. For this we are trying to organise seminars to create awareness among the people about the grave danger to democracy, the country is facing today, said S.R. Hiremath, Social Activist, CFD President
