After reading the article titled “Destiny…Thy name is surgery?” in Star of Mysore dated June 14 by Dr. H.V. Shivaram, who is now an eminent surgeon in Bengaluru’s Aster Hospital, I really got goosebumps!
What a traumatic experience he had when a mad horse attacked him, biting tightly his arm and dragging him around the Mysore Medical College campus.
How a cook of the college canteen at the right time made the mad horse release its sharp grip which left the young doctor with grievous injuries. And how a tragic amputation of the entire shoulder was saved by the readily available very eminent surgeon Dr. C.B. Murthy at that point of time.
Now that Dr Shivaram has become an eminent surgeon, shouldn’t we thank the great destiny that came in the form of that cook and Dr. Murthy ?
These types of episodes happen to many of us in our lives. God’s grace sometimes takes the shape of destiny and the help in need comes to us through fellow humans and circumstances. So, we should always have faith in ourselves and the great destiny that could positively change our lives anytime.

Dr. C.B. Murthy, the surgeon who saved the hand of Dr. H.V. Shivaram from being amputated, himself became a victim in the hands of destiny. About two years back, the very same destiny in a cruel blow “suddenly knocked the man (Dr. Murthy) with a massive stroke leaving him paralysed… He is still convalescing in far away Mumbai.” It is a paradox that even good people like Dr. Murthy become victims in the hands of cruel destiny.—Ed
