When it comes to taking care of our oral health, it is incredible to see how far dentistry has come. Thanks to advancements in technology and techniques, going to the dentist today is a more comfortable, efficient and effective experience than ever before.

One such technological advancement that has transformed the world of dentistry is dental scanners. These devices have revolutionised the way dentists assess, diagnose and treat oral health issues.

Digital dentistry is a broad term encompassing any dental technology that involves the use of computer-based components such as hardware devices and software programme.

For example, an intra-oral scanner consists of a hand-held camera wand, a computer and software. The small, smooth wand is connected to a computer that runs a customised software that processes the digital data sensed by the camera. The procedure is less likely to induce gag response, making the scanning experience more comfortable for patients.

In the beginning, dentist will insert the scanning wand into the patient’s mouth and gently move it over the surface area of the teeth. The wand automatically captures the size and shape of each tooth. It only takes a minute or two to scan and the system will be able to produce a  detailed digital impression or digital model.

This data will be transmitted to labs to fabricate any needed appliances. With this instant feedback, the whole process will be more efficient, saving time and allowing dentists to diagnose more patients.

Dental scanners eliminate the need for uncomfortable and messy impression materials. Patients no longer have to endure the sensation of having moulds placed in their mouths, which can trigger a gag reflex.

Traditional impression methods often required patients to wait for the moulds to set, increasing the overall appointment time. Dental scanners provide instant results, reducing appointment duration and the need for follow-up visits.

Dentists can easily share the digital models with patients on a screen, helping them better understand their oral health conditions and treatment options. This enhances patient-dentist communication and informed decision-making.

By choosing dental practices equipped with this modern technology, patients can look forward to a more pleasant and effective dental experience, ultimately contributing to better oral health and well-being. Embracing the advantages of dental scanners is a step towards a brighter, healthier smile.
