Mysuru: The Mysuru Police Dog Squad’s ‘Gaja,’ which has become a nightmare for ganja and hashish peddlers, has drawn the appreciation of the people by participating in the international sports competition and bringing laurels to the department.
Gaja, who has been adept at finding ganja and hashish from peddlers, was born on May 4, 2011 and belongs to the Labrador Retriever breed. He was inducted to the dog squad when he was just three-months-old and trained in finding narcotics and drugs.
He has been serving in the department for the last eight years. There are 10 dogs in Mysuru City Dog Squad, six in the district and in the Range (six districts in one range) there are 40 to 50 dogs. Even then Gaja has been involved in three operations and has been successful twice in tracing ganja and hashish. He has also won the Best Dog of the Range and other prestigious awards, said Gaja’s trainer M.B. Balaraman.
Achievement in sports: Gaja has participated in the Karnataka Police Academy South Zone sports competition and won three gold medals. He has also won a gold and silver at the State-level competition and in the 2017 international competition held at Chennai, he bagged the second place.
Still has two-and-a-half years service: His tenure is for ten years and Gaja has already served seven-and-a-half years in the dog squad. After finishing his daily training, he is taken on investigation rounds near the helipad, Palace, church, railway station and other prominent places to sniff for traces of narcotics. There is a separate food chart for the dogs and accordingly he is served his diet.
Achievements: Gaja during training and sports competitions exhibits his talents and listens to every word of his trainer without fail, thus earning the appreciation from his department.
His talents include jumping through the tyre, slipping into the pipe, running on the compound, standing on two legs, jumping, crawling and other adventures, said his trainer Balaraman with a great deal of pride of his dog Gaja.
