“Don’t harass women complainants at Police Stations”

Mysuru: Stating that women victims should not be harassed in Police Stations by asking them repeated questions, State Women’s Commission Chairperson Nagalakshmi Bai has asked the Police to give a patient hearing to victims.

She was speaking at a meeting on the measures to be taken for preventing crimes against women and to review the status of cases registered pertaining to atrocities against women at the DC’s office here this morning.

Making a reference to her recent visit to North Karnataka districts, Nagalakshmi said that she found many number of cases registered related to crimes against women and children which included human trafficking, child abuse, child marriages, prostitution, female foeticide etc.

Pointing out that many women in these districts were threatened for lodging complaints regarding women atrocities in Mysuru district which happens to be the home district of CM Siddharamaiah.

However, the picture is not the same in Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts where there is a high number of complaints registered with the Women’s Commission.

Additional SP N. Rudramuni, who read out the statistics pertaining to crimes against women and children in the district, said that the Police were doing their best to address the complaints and constantly reviewing the status of such cases. He also emphasised on the need for setting up helpline for women in rural areas as done in urban areas.

City Crime Branch (CCB) ACP C. Gopal also gave a brief statistics related to atrocities against women and the action taken by the City Police.

DC D. Randeep, Women and Child Development Secretary Kavitha Mannigeri, Asst. Secretary Susheela, Women and Child Welfare Department Deputy Director K. Radha, Backward Classes Welfare Department District Officer Somashekar Jigani, Ambedkar Development Corporation Officer B.S. Prabha and other district officials were present.
