Mysuru: Three of a family including a man, his mother and sister, have been sentenced to jail upon their conviction in a dowry death case in city.
K.N. Roopa, the Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court Judge has announced the quantum of sentence to one Gowtham, his mother Kushal Kumari and his sister Swapna, all residents of Sharadadevi Nagar in city. They were facing charges of abetment of suicide of Mahalakshmi alias Soni, the wife of Gowtham.
Gowtham has been sentenced to 10-year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 2.25 lakh, while Kushal Kumari and Swapna, have been sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 1.75 lakh fine each.
Gowtham had married Mahalakshmi, daughter of Vishweshwar Rao and Sukanya Bai couple, residents of Rajendra Nagar in city on Oct. 19, 2011. He had been given Rs.10,000 cash, gold chain weighing 12 grams, half-kg silver lamp and other silver valuables as dowry, at the time of marriage.
The convicted trio had been physically and mentally harassing Mahalakshmi to transfer the ownership of a house, she had inherited from her grandparents to the name of Gowtham. Unable to bear the harassment, Mahalakshmi had allegedly committed suicide at her husband’s house in Sharadadevi Nagar, by hanging self to the ceiling fan on Aug. 17, 2013.
The then ACP B.T. Kavitha, who had registered a case in this regard, had submitted a charge sheet to the Court. B.E. Yogeshwar was the Public Prosecutor in the case.
