Dowry harassment: Woman seeks justice

Just 10 days after giving birth to a baby girl, 23-year-old K. Indira, a home-maker from Kyathamaranahalli in city is fighting for justice.

Addressing a press meet holding her 10-day-old infant and sitting next to her mother Kempamma at Pathrakarthara Bhavan here yesterday, Indira claimed that she married Gopalakrishnaswamy, an FDA with the Fisheries Department in April 2016. But after marriage, Gopalakrishnaswamy began to harass her for more dowry, besides ill-treating her and leaving her to fend for herself while she was pregnant. She later lodged a complaint against her husband Swamy, mother-in-law Jayamma, Swamy’s uncle Sridhar and his wife Sheela of Chamundi Hill and Swamy’ sister Nagamani for dowry harassment, she said.

Accusing the Police of stalling the probe into the case filed by Indira against her husband and his relatives, she alleged that the staff attached to the Women’s Police Station were not probing the case seriously.

She further said though her family members tried to resolve the issue with the intervention of elders and community leaders, her husband and his relatives ill-treated her.

Accusing her husband’s relative Sridhar of Chamundi Hill of using his influence to stall the probe besides threatening her, she alleged that attempts are being made to get her husband Swamy married to another girl.

Indira, claiming to have lodged the Police complaint on Jan.5, urged the Police to render justice to her. Indira’s mother Kempamma said that the Police have not acted on the complaint filed by her daughter and this has emboldened the accused.

Meanwhile Sridhar of Chamundi Hill, one of the accused named by Indira in her complaint, said that he was no way involved in alleged dowry harassment. Claiming that he had made moves to reunite the couple, he denied having harassed anyone.
