Mysore/Mysuru: “People call Doctors as God, but assault them even when they are at no fault which is deplorable,” opined retired Medical Officer and President of District Chutuku Sahitya Parishat (KSP) Dr. M.G.R. Urs
Dr. Urs was speaking after inaugurating National Doctors Day celebrations organised by District Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) at Namana Kalamantapa in city on Monday. “There are people who call doctors as God and say ‘Vaidyo Narayano Hari.’ But doctors are not God. They function as representatives of God. They are performing the duty of treating people with health issues and people must understand this,” said Dr. Urs.
Expressing his anguish about the reported assaults on doctors, he said that, doctors do their best to improve health condition of their patients and their lives.
“But, we are hearing reports of assault on doctors when the treatments don’t bring expected results. This has compelled doctors to work under stress,” added Dr. Urs.
Stating that National Doctors Day is observed across India to commemorate the birth anniversary of country’s role model Dr. B.C. Roy, his legacy and humanitarian values, he said that even when Roy was holding the Office of Chief Minister of West Bengal, he was carrying out his duty as a doctor.
Dr. Roy was treating his patients for two hours daily which is an indication of his commitment and love for the medical profession, said Dr. Urs.
He concluded by advising doctors not to ignore their profession, even as they pursue their other interests.
Dr. Jayashree, Dr. Srinivas, Dr. H. Hanumanthappa, Dr. Nyruthya and Dr. Soumya Gururaj were felicitated at the function to commemorate National Doctors Day. Cultural programmes like reciting of limericks, singing, reading of modern Vachanas and others were organised as part of the event.
District KSP President Maddikere Gopal presided. Social activist Dr. K. Raghuram Vajapayee, Sanskrit Scholar Dr. K. Leela Prakash, KSP Hon. Secretary M.N. Latha Mohan and others were present.
