Mysuru: JSS Sangeetha Sabha is featuring the ‘Golden Voice’ Dr. Pantula Rama, an internationally acclaimed Karnatak vocalist, in its special music programme at 6.15 pm on Oct.22 at Navajyoti auditorium, JSS Women’s College, Saraswathipuram.
Dr. Rama was born into a culturally rich family of mother Padmavathi, a veena artiste and father Pantula Gopala Rao, who was also her first music teacher. She had advanced training under Sangeetha Kala Sagara Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao. She is highly regarded for her chaste, aesthetic and innovative style of singing. One of the youngest ‘Top’ grade artiste of AIR, she is also graded ‘B High’ in violin and viola.
A Ph.D from Andhra University, Dr. Rama has authored a book, ‘Shaping of an ideal Carnatic Musician through Sadhana.’ She has also initiated a movement ‘Pa Re..the supreme’ which aims at creating awareness and stimulation of evolution through music.
She has been honoured with titles like Gaana Kalaa Saraswathi, Asthana Vidwan of Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham, Isai Peroli, Nada Vallabha among others.
She has received awards such as Outstanding Lady Vocalist, Best Pallavi award from the Madras Music Academy and Ragam Tanam Pallavi award from Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival. A globe trotter, she has accompanied many stalwarts on the violin. She was also chosen to conduct a Mega Music serial ‘Raga Ravali,’ a comprehensive programme on the 72 Melakartasystem, produced by the TTD’s SVBC Channel.
On Sunday, she will be accompanied by her husband and an accomplished violinist Vid. M.S.N. Murthy, seasoned percussionists Vid. A. Radhesh on mridanga and Vid. S. Manjunath on ghata. For details, call: 99867-00156.
