Mysore/Mysuru: Senior Theatre Person Dr. Rameshwari Verma will be conferred with this year’s Natana Award instituted by Natana School of Theatre Arts in memory of former Natana President late S. Subramanyam.
The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, citation and a memento, will be presented during the inaugural ceremony of Raja-Maja summer camp at BSS Vidyodaya School premises in city on Apr. 14 at 10 am.
Previously, the award was presented to theatre personalities like Lakshmi Bai Enagi, M.N. Lakshmi Devi, Subhadramma Mansoor, R.T. Rama, Shathamma, Indiramma, Jayalakshmi Patil, Radha and Rukmini.
About Rameshwari Verma
Born on Oct. 21, 1936 to journalist P.R. Ramaiah, Founder of ‘Tainadu’ Kannada Newspaper and Jayalakshmamma couple, Rameshwari Verma has been associated with theatre for the past seven decades. She has played a pivotal role in building modern theatre in Mysuru.
One of the Founder-Members of Saraswathipuram Thengina Thopu (Samathento) Theatre Group, Rameshwari has worked with theatre stalwarts such as Parvathavani, B.V. Karanth, Prasanna, Sathyu and Sinduvalli Ananthamurthy among others.
After completing her basic education at St. Theresa School in Bengaluru, she joined University of Mysore (UoM) for further studies. After starting her teaching career at the UoM, Rameshwari also served as Founder and Chairman of Centre for Women Studies at the University.
Besides acting in a number of plays, Rameshwari Verma has also directed plays such as Rudali, Mookajjiya Kanasugalu, Sonata and Medea. She has served twice as the Member of Karnataka Nataka Academy.
Rameshwari Verma has been conferred with many awards including Karnataka Rajyotsava Award (2016) and Karnataka Nataka Academy Award in recognition of her service to theatre.
