Online fraudster posing as Mumbai Cop extorts Rs. 95.90 lakh from city senior citizen

Mysuru: An online fraudster, posing as Mumbai Cop has extorted Rs. 95.90 lakh from a senior citizen by claiming that a parcel sent in the name of the senior citizen contained drugs.

The senior citizen, who lost his money is 73-year-old Sheshadri (name changed), a resident of VV Mohalla in city.

About a week back, Sheshadri received a call on his WhatsApp and the caller, who identified himself as Mumbai Police officer Vinayak Deshmukh, sent a message on Skype App and immediately called Sheshadri on this app.

When Sheshadri asked him why he had called, Vinayak told Sheshadri that a parcel sent in his name contained drugs and an arrest warrant has been issued on him. Vinayak then told Sheshadri to transfer all the money in his bank accounts to him and the same would be returned after the enquiry process gets over.

Believing Vinayak, Sheshadri transferred a total of Rs. 95.90 lakh from his various Bank accounts to the Bank account sent by Vinayak only to be cheated.

A case has been registered at city’s CEN Police Station.

Fraudsters, posing as Delhi and Mumbai Cops, calling innocent people and cheating them of lakhs of rupees is increasing day-by-day.

The fraudsters in Police uniform also make video calls, threaten people by making serious allegations on them and extort lakhs of rupees.

CEN Police have urged the people not to fall prey to such fraudsters and never disclose Bank accounts, OTPs and other such information to them.
