‘Early detection can cure breast cancer’

Mysuru: SPARSH, Forum for Women Empowerment, Wellness Centre & Hygiene, SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, Jayalakshmipuram, Mysuru, in association with Inner Wheel Club of Mysore West had organised an awareness programme on breast cancer in the college premises recently.

Resource Person, Dr. Ramya Yethadka, Consultant Oncologist, Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru said that, 26% to 28% of breast cancer cases are reported in the country and 90,000 to 1 lakh deaths among women are due to breast cancer every year. Breast cancer is diagnosed among women irrespective of age or gender.

The ratio of breast cancer in women and men is 100:1, that is, for every 100 women showing symptoms of breast cancer there is one man, said Dr. Ramya.

She emphasised that even during the time of lactation, breast cancer can be developed. A woman who has never given birth is prone to breast cancer and those who give birth after the age of 35 have high risk of getting breast cancer. It can be genetic too.

“Do not neglect the symptoms, because health is very important in anyone’s life. Breast cancer develops in 4 stages and first 3 stages are usually painless. However, it is curable if detected at early stage. Early menarche and late menopause can increase the risk of breast cancer. It can be tested in two ways, self-examination and Mammogram. Women above 21 years of age should examine (self) their breast once in 2-3 months and women above 40 years of age should undergo mammogram every year,” suggested Dr. Ramya.

She highlighted the importance of insurance policies and schemes that are available for the treatment of cancer.

Dr. Ramya concluded her talk by saying, “Let your faith be bigger than your fear so that we fight cancer together.”
