Engineers’ Day celebrations: Grand AI tribute: Massive Sir M.V. portrait at MITM

Mysuru, Sept. 7 (GA&BS)- On account of the birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya (Sir M.V.), celebrated as Engineers’ Day on Sept. 15, the Maharaja Institute of Technology Mysore (MITM), in association with SAI CAD Institute, Bengaluru, has planned an ambitious tribute.

The Department of Civil Engineering at MITM aims to create a record by crafting a massive portrait of Sir M.V. using cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

Addressing media persons at Patrakarthara Bhavan, Dr. C. Ramakrishne Gowda, HoD of Civil Engineering at MITM, said the initiative is intended to give a befitting honour to Sir M.V., who served as the Dewan of Mysuru.

The record attempt will span five different fields, with the portrait to be created on the college stadium grounds covering an area of 80×100 metres. Over 120 students, supported by more than 35 faculty members, will participate in this monumental project.

Explaining the process, Dr. Gowda said that materials like Manufactured Sand (M-Sand), crushed stones of 40mm thickness, nylon ropes, non-hazardous paints and sand will be used. The students have undergone prerequisite training, and five full days will be dedicated to drawing the portrait with the help of AI tools and drone scanning technology. Metal nails will be used for precise markings.

“This project will provide young students with hands-on experience in creativity, technical expertise, and teamwork,” he said. Once completed, the portrait will be on public display on Sept. 16. Applications have been submitted to the Guinness World Records and other record-keeping bodies for official recognition, he added.

Head of SAI CAD, M. Manjunath Reddy, recalled a similar initiative undertaken in Chitradurga, where a portrait of Lord Anjaneyaswamy was drawn on five acres of land, setting a record for the largest such artwork.

“When MITM authorities approached us with this novel idea, we drew inspiration from that success. This time, the plan is to create an equally grand portrait of Sir M. Visvesvaraya using advanced technology,” he said.

MITM Administrative Officer and Civil Engineering faculty member A.M. Aniruddha and Assistant Professor Ravikiran were also present at the press meet.
