Suttur: As part of World Environment Day, a tree-planting programme was held at ICAR-JSS Agricultural Science Centre in Suttur, Nanjangud taluk, on June 5.
Speaking as the chief guest, Suttur Mutt Co-ordinating Officer G.L. Tripurantaka observed that plastic had become an integral part of modern life and getting rid of that was a tough proposition. He requested people to shun plastic as it was a highly non-biodegradable product.
Addressing the gathering, Centre Head Dr. Arun Balamatti opined that water bodies were getting contaminated owing to continuous discharge of effluents from industries without total treatment. He suggested total harvesting of solar power to reduce pollution levels.
A demonstration of preparing compost manure by utilising agricultural waste was presented by the Centre officials.
Progressive farmers Madappa and Abdul Ghani Khan spoke.
