Bengaluru: Renowned danseuse Hamsa Moily, daughter of former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily, passed away here yesterday. She was 46.
Hamsa, who was unwell since a few days, was advised rest at home. However, her health suddenly deteriorated yesterday and she was shifted to a private hospital. Unfortunately, she breathed her last without responding to the treatment. Upon receiving the news of his daughter’s death, Veerappa Moily, who was on a political tour in Chattisgarh, returned home immediately.
Hamsa, the third daughter of Veerappa Moily, was not only a Bharatanatyam artiste but was also involved in social activities. She had also authored a Hindi play for children titled ‘Kyun Kyun Ladki’ inspired by the book written by Mahashweta Devi.
She was also featured in a Tamil movie ‘Sringaram’ directed by Sharada Ramanathan.
Hamsa had also acted in plays ‘Agnipata’ and ‘Chitrapata Ramayana’ directed by B. Jayashree, ‘Smashana Kurukshetra’ directed by M.S. Satyu, ‘The Vagina Monologues’ and ‘Kamla’ directed by Preetam Koilpillai. She had also authored ‘The Homecoming,’ a collection of poems published by Rupa Publications.
Over the past several years, Hamsa had been sharing her dance experiences with children and actors, under organisations like Gillo, Mumbai and The Kishkindi Trust, Anegundi, Hampi, among others. Her choreography work includes ‘Sri Ramayana Mahanveshanam’ — performances based on M. Veerappa Moily’s book; ‘Bhavana,’ a Bharatanatyam dance/ theatre production on the theme of adoption, written by Sushma Veerappa; stage plays ‘Kurukshetra Se Kargil Tak’ and ‘Bidaru Mandala’ directed by M.S. Sathyu.
