Mysuru: Two conmen in the guise of Policemen duped an elderly lady and took away her gold chain at Saraswathipuram this morning. The unsuspecting woman fell for the glib talk of the criminals and ended up in losing her chain.
The incident occurred at around 8.45 am and the victim has been identified as 70-year-old Nagarathna, wife of late Malali Gowda, who was an advocate. She is a resident of No. 359, 14th Main, Saraswathipuram.
Nagarathna goes on a morning walk and as per her routine, she started from her house at 7.25 am today. She usually takes the route from Saraswathipuram Fire Brigade, Kukkarahalli Lake Road, Vishwamanava Double Road, Vijaya Bank Circle, Telecom Training Centre, Kamakshi Hospital and reach the Anjaneyaswamy Temple and Krishnadhama at T.K. Layout. From there she used to walk to Krishnadhama.
Today too, she reached Krishnadhama and was standing under a tree when two men approached her.
The men told her they were Policemen and since there was heavy rush inside the Krishnadhama it was not safe to wear gold jewellery inside.
In her statement to the Police, the woman said, “I got carried away by those smooth talkers and I believed them. They made me remove my four gold bangles and a 40-gram gold chain. They told me that they would wrap the jewellery in a piece of paper so that I can go home and open it. As Saraswathipuram Police Station was nearby, I did not suspect them,” she said.
The conmen managed to make the woman remove the jewels and wrapped them in a piece of paper but cleverly diverted her attention to steal the gold chain. Believing them, Nagarathna took the paper pack. As she neared the Saraswathipuram Police Station, she opened the pack only to find the gold chain missing. She immediately lodged a complaint.
Saraswathipuram Inspector Nagegowda and Sub-Inspector Mohan visited the spot. CCTV footage showed the two men talking to Nagarathna but the visuals are hazy.
