Nanjangud: A debt-ridden farmer committed suicide by hanging to an iron pipe at the pump house located in his land, here yesterday.
The deceased has been identified as M. Lokesh (28), a resident of Ahalya village in the town.
In his complaint to the Police, Nanjundegowda, Lokesh’s elder brother, has said that Lokesh was taking care of agricultural activities for which he had borrowed Rs.3.50 lakh from the bank and Rs.2 lakh from moneylenders.
“Lokesh suffered a huge loss since the cotton and sugarcane crops failed owing severe drought. This year, watermelon and tomato plants were washed away in recent flood which forced him to take the extreme step,” Nanjundegowda has mentioned in the complaint.
Hullahalli Police have registered a case and investigating.
Lokesh’s body would be handed over to the family members after conducting a post mortem at Nanjangud Government Hospital.
Dy.SP Prabhakar Rao Shinde, Circle Inspector Rajashekar, Tahsildar Mahesh Kumar, Deputy Tahsildar Balasubramanya and Deepak of Agriculture Department visited the spot.
