Nanjangud: Depressed over taunting talks by his siblings and their family members, a farmer committed suicide by jumping into Kapila River yesterday.
The deceased farmer is Chikkamadanayaka (75), a resident of Sinduvalli village in the taluk.
He had kept his slippers, senior citizen identity card, towel and a book containing phone numbers on the Hejjige Bridge and jumped into the river.
Last week, Chikkamadanayaka’s house had collapsed due to heavy rains and when Tahsildar M. Shivamurthy and Revenue Department officials had come to inspect the house to access the damage, had assured of providing compensation.
But Chikkamadanayaka’s siblings and their family members provided false information to the Tahsildar by saying that Chikkamadanayaka had demolished the house himself to get compensation and the house had not collapsed due to rains, it is learnt.
A fight took place between the two families and rumours were spread on Chikkamadanayaka who was also humiliated. Depressed over this, Chikkamadanayaka committed suicide by jumping into Kapila River, according to the complaint lodged by Chikkamadanayaka’s family members with Nanjangud Rural Police.
