First S.L. Bhyrappa Sahitya Pratishtana Award for Prof. L.V. Shantakumari

Mysore/Mysuru: The first S.L. Bhyrappa Sahitya Pratishtana Award will be presented to critic and littérateur Prof. L.V. Shantakumari at a programme organised by the Pratishtana at Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs in Bengaluru on Feb. 19 at 10.30 am.

Writer and journalist S.R. Ramaswamy will present the award while noted littérateur Dr. S.L. Bhyrappa will preside. Shatavadani Dr. R. Ganesh, Writer Sahana Vijaykumar and Sub-Editor of Prekshaa B.N. Shashikiran will speak about the life and works of Shantakumari.

The annual award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh with a citation duly signed by the Pratishtana President Dr. Bhyrappa.

S. L. Bhyrappa Sahitya Pratishtana is a Trust which was registered in the year 1999, to further the cause of intellectual advancement in the field of education, literature and art.

PROFILE: Prof. Shantakumari is a critic and translator par excellence. The octogenarian is a symbol of grace and serenity who has enriched the Kannada language through her literary works. Many poets and philosophers including Valmiki, Socrates, Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Omar Khayyam, D.V. Gundappa, P.T. Narasimhachar, Shivaram Karanth and S.L. Bhyrappa, have been brought alive in her literary works. She has published lucid translations of the works of noted littérateurs such as Will Durant and Pannalal Patel. Prof. Shantakumari has authored ‘Yugasakhsi’ and ‘Pratibhana,’ that contain insightful analyses of Bhyrappa’s novels. She has also translated a few novels such as ‘Gruhabhanga,’ ‘Mandra,’ ‘Sakshi’ and ‘Daatu.’
