Mysore/Mysuru: The challenges faced by a bed-ridden 65-year-old woman, diagnosed with high-grade Chondrosarcoma, were overcome as she regained her mobility through successful ‘Total Femur Replacement Surgery’ performed by the medical team at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital (NH), Mysuru.

The successful completion of a path-breaking Total Femur Replacement Surgery, a complex procedure where the entire length of the thigh bone, including the hip and knee joints, were replaced with metallic bone not only restored her ability to  walk but also returned her to a state of normalcy.

The elderly lady arrived with severe thigh bone pain. After a comprehensive workup, she was diagnosed with high-grade Chondrosarcoma, which had severely damaged her thigh bone and hindered her ability to walk comfortably.

Under the skilled hands of Dr. K.R. Suhas, a specialist in Robotic and HIPEC Surgery and Dr. M.B. Suman, an expert in Ortho-Oncology, the patient underwent an extensive 7-8 hour surgery. The team successfully removed the cancer-affected thigh bone and expertly replaced it with metallic joints and  bone, accomplishing a Total Femur Replacement.

Addressing a press meet at Patrakarthara Bhavan in city recently, Hospital’s Clinical Director Dr. M.N. Ravi said, “In this particular elderly lady with advanced bone malignancy, the team responded to the challenge. The tumour had longitudinal extension in the long bone of the thigh and limb salvage was difficult. Total femur replacement was done after total resection of the bone. The complex procedure done by the Departments of Oncology and Orthopaedics at NH provided the lady relief from pain and better quality of life with preservation of limb function and mobility.”

Dr. K.R. Suhas, while addressing the media said that Chondrosarcoma is a rare type of cancer which begins in bone, most commonly affecting pelvis, hip and shoulder.  Usually it is to show growing tumour but very rarely affects the whole bone as in this case.”

Dr. Suman said, “Total Femur Replacement requires a high level of expertise and state-of-the-art facilities. This is a first-of-its-kind surgery conducted in Mysuru and surrounding areas, bringing advanced treatments closer to patients.”
