Focus on reducing mother-infant mortality: IAP National President Dr. G.V. Basavaraja

KARPEDICON-2024: State-level Conference of Paediatricians held

Mysuru: The three-day 43rd Annual Karnataka Paediatric Conference (KARPEDICON-2024), a State-level conference of Karnataka State Paediatricians, organised jointly by Indian Academy of Paediatrics – Karnataka State Board (IAP-KSB), IAP Mysuru, JSS Medical College and Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI), was held in city from Oct. 18 to 20.

IAP National President Dr. G.V. Basavaraja, who was the chief guest, inaugurated the meet at Sri Rajendra Auditorium of JSS Medical College on Oct. 19.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Basavaraja called upon Paediatricians to address the rising mother-infant mortality rate, even in today’s era of modern medical advancements and to work towards significantly  reducing it.

“Despite the advances in modern medical science, the post-delivery mother-infant mortality rate has not decreased as expected. This challenge demands attention not only from doctors but also from the Government. Reducing this rate requires timely medical intervention and treatment,” he said.

“A child’s health must be safeguarded from the embryonic stage until adulthood. It’s crucial that doctors focus on preventing deaths during child-birth and follow appropriate child care procedures,” said Dr. Basavaraja.

“In the past, families had a Family Doctor who knew their medical history. That tradition has faded, but it is critical to revive such holistic care,” added Dr. Basavaraja.
