Former Mayor flays MCC’s tax policy

Mysore/Mysuru: Stating that the Mysuru City Corporation’s (MCC) tax policy and revenue tax computation is flawed, former Mayor Sandesh Swamy has urged the authorities to frame a scientific tax policy.

Speaking to presspersons here  on Thursday, Sandesh Swamy said that S.M. Krishna introduced the Self-Assessment Scheme (SAS) in tax stipulation, when he was the Chief Minister two decades ago. Now, the SAS system is in place in the MCC too, according to which there is a provision for hike in property tax once in every three years. But the unscientific computation of the tax structure has forced the people to cough up more as taxes, he opined and urged the authorities for a convenient tax structure. Pointing out that the MCC has been charging more even for Khata transfer, the former Mayor claimed that the MCC was levying 5 percent as stamp duty, when actually it should be 2 percent.  Charging the MCC of imposing a high cess, he urged the MCC to reduce the cess charges.

Contending that there are many public complaints on variations in tax computation at different Zonal Offices, he alleged that the MCC authorities have remained silent on his repeated pleas for a uniform and scientific tax structure. He urged the MCC Commissioner to look into the matter and set right the anomalies in tax computation.
